We live in a fast paced world where multitasking is not only given honorable mention, but majority of the time a mandatory option. While this learned behavior can definitely help us check more things off the to-do list, it also makes us less likely to retain information in working memory, which impairs problem solving and creativity.
It’s no surprise, then, that everyone can benefit from a stronger ability to pay attention.
At any given time you’re required to distribute a limited amount of attention over a potentially vast number of objects. Regardless of whether you’re trying to process the details of a book you’re reading or listening to a friend share about an important life experience.
Whenever our environment requires us to pay attention to something, we enhance the neural representation of that thing. The more focused attention we can give to a certain experience, the stronger the signal to the brain that this information needs to be processed and remembered!
You will be happy to know that the brain can learn to ignore distractions and as a result make you a more efficient, creative, and productive participant in life!
Anytime you begin to feel overwhelmed by mental distraction or the need to multitask, STOP, give the brain a break, bring AWARENESS to your situation and BREATHE. It is important to remember that you are in charge here and applying simple control and organization to the brain will offer a lifetime of superior working memory!
